Botanicula is a point'n'click exploration game created by the makers of award-winning Machinarium - studio Amanita Design and Czech band DVA. Five friends, little tree creatures, set out on a journey to save the last seed from their home tree which is infested by evil parasites. Botanicula is a surreal fantasy game from Amanita Design. Throughout the game, there are creature cards to collect, and within each chapter there is a separate form of collectible item required to complete the chapter.

Botanicula is the latest point and clicker from the people that brought us the excellent Machinarium. And it is without a doubt one of the most adorable games we’ve ever played... observe...

The story is pretty straight forward, in a weird and wonderful kind of way. You lead this group of five little plant-like animal thingies through their tree to save it from a bunch of creepy life-sucking spider thingies.

And they claim this is actually a point and click “explorer” rather than an “adventure” and you can see why. The focus is on simply exploring the levels and clicking on everything you can, rather than solving lots of processor intensive puzzles.

HEX

Yeah, it’s mostly just little fetch quests where you need to find a particular object and bring it to the right place. There are a few little mini-games here too like a volleyball match, a lady-bug race and a maze which were great... but there were was one puzzle where you had to blow on a bunch of horns to create various animals, and I dunno, there was clearly some logic in how to solve it but it was such illogical logic that I ended up just guessing until I got it right.

Yeah that one got to me too. And it can be easy to miss something since you often have to click on things a few times before you trigger the object or event that you need to move on. There was a few times I found myself going around in circles, not sure of what I’d missed.

Yeah, it’s an easy game tho and it’s almost impossible to get frustrated since you’ll be smiling the whole way through. Almost everything you click on manages to surprise and delight in some way. As you can see it just looks amazing and the music is so uplifting and joyful, and the way it builds as you interact with the world is great. Playing this is like having sunshine and happiness injected straight into your eyeballs.

Affirmative, the audio definitely deserves special mention, besides having an excellent soundtrack I also enjoyed all of their silly voices and how most of the sound effects are just made by people.

Yeah, and I loved all the cute and creepy characters you come across in the world. Everything is kind of disturbingly cute... and why exactly there are tiny penguins in a in a tree I do not know, and frankly, I don’t care...

And for every critter you discover you unlock a little collector card. A lot of critters are fairly well hidden too so it’s a good incentive to explore and click on everything you can. Especially since you get some bonus presents at the end based on how many you find.

Also I liked it when you have to choose which of your little guys is needed for a particular job. I always found myself trying to choose the wrong guy on purpose just so I could see each of their little animations. But anyway, final thoughts Baj?

Well the gameplay is very simple, but as a total package with that art and music, it’s an amazing little journey. So it’s an 8 from me.

HEX

Yeah, it’s definitely not the best puzzler if you want something to strain your brain but it’s just such a joy to play through. I’m giving it 8.5.
